Shawn Robertson's
Comments: "I'd say
in general that Mr. Nang's setup really picks out and separates the
individual instruments. It's very clean and detailed with a hint
of warmth. The bass is quite prominent with good punch. The
box throws a wide soundstage with some instruments being
played in front of the plane of the speaker quite
convincingly. There's a definite tube feel to the |

Mr.
Nang's Comments:
"I enjoy a variety of music, ranging from Light classical (Violins) to vocals. My favorite title includes "Gioacchino Rossini Sonate a Quattro" (Philips), and "Miracle Makers" (Bein & Fushi, Chicago). I also like the Chinese singer Tsai Chin.
My system use to be down in the basement. The room was relatively small and I wanted to experiment with a larger area so the setup in now in the living room. I believe one of the key contributing factors to achieving great sounds lies with speaker positioning. I began by experimenting with a pair of bookshelf speakers in various positions. When the ideal sound was attained, I then moved the Avalons into position.
The drawback with my system is the uneven "L" shape room. The left protruding wall affects the imaging of the sounds produced. Every room has its own limitations and I believe this is "as good as it gets".
Although I have hard wood floors, the sound of my system is very soft and musical, very much like tube gears. The Wadia is surprisingly warm sounding, the Gryphons are warm sounding and same with the Cardas cables. My system is very tube like despite being a solid state system."
To achieve a true soundstage presentation, you need a lot of open space BEHIND the speakers. This will give plenty of air and openness to the presentation. Without the open space, the sound will be a little cluttered and stuffy. As you can see in the pictures, my speakers are much closer to the listener than to the back wall.
Future Plans:
"I would like to switch to a Hovland HP100 Preamp. I would very much like to try out tube equipments. The Hovland preamp should be a nice complement to the Gryphon power amp.

Wadia 860 - Build like a tank. The chassis is machined from a solid piece of aluminum. The player weights over 40 lbs.
Gryphon LE Preamp, unit 48 of 100 produced. True channel seperation, when you physically separate the Left Right channel into 2 separate units. Separate power supply module, seen below.

Really, its No. 48 of 100 ! No Shit !
Gryphon Power Amp. 100W per channel, pure Class A.
Avalon Eclipse Classic |
The speaker sounds very different without the front cover. The Avalons are designed with the front cover on.
Without the front cover, the speaker sounds more aggressive and pointy.
|
The front baffle is made of 5" thick solid mdf. Side walls are 1.5" thick MDF. |
